I just feel it’s a huge disservice to David Bowie’s brilliant and ambiguous career to portray him to a new generation as “in the background cryin’ over girls”.
Perhaps there is some ironic angle I’m not seeing? The fact that they don’t appreciate Bowie at this party?
Sucks because I really like this song. Why do you do this to me, Mr. Van Vleet?
it made me wonder too in the same way. but they are not disliking Bowie at this party, only the author (let’s say Sean) does. in fact the woman this is about likes Bowie and she’s having this party more or less without Sean, having fun without him. he resents that and tells her that she can’t take her heart away from him. she likes Bowie who is sensitive (cries over girls), but Sean claims that he is not like that, he is a dominating partner who has everything under control.
and if you really think about it, Sean’s attitude in this song is a lot like Bowie’s in songs like Serious Moonlight and Cracked Actor, and even China Girl might have a connection.
